The Significance Of The Sea Of Galilee In Jesus’ Ministry
- The Shoreline of The Sea Of Galilee
- A Fishing Boat on Lake Kinneret
Many people do not realize this, but the Sea of Galilee is a fresh water lake located in Northeast Israel. The areas surrounding The Sea Of Galilee (modern name Kinneret) were inhabited by many cultures in ancient times. Historically, the towns of Tiberias, Gadara, and Hippos were developed by the Romans, Greeks and Hasmoneans. The areas surrounding the Sea of Galilee supplied the locals with an abundance of food, fresh water, and resources.
The synoptic Gospels of Matthew (4:18-22), Mark (1:14-20), and Luke (5:1-11) share accounts of Jesus recruiting four of His Apostles from the areas around The Sea of Galilee. The Apostle’s that joined Jesus from this region included Simon (a fisherman) and his brother Andrew, as well as John and James who were also brothers.
The shores of the Sea of Galilee are where Jesus spent much of His time teaching and preaching. Much of Jesus’ ministry, as recorded in the Gospels, took place on or around the Sea of Galilee. Many of the miracles recorded in the Gospels are believed to have taken place on The Sea of Galilee. These miracles include Jesus walking on water, the calming of the storm, the disciples and the boat filled with fish, and Jesus feeds 5000 in Tabgha. The Sermon On The Mount is believed to have taken place on a hill overlooking The Sea Of Galilee.
Most of the ancient towns surrounding The Sea Of Galilee have been abandoned. However, Tiberias remains a thriving town that offers awesome opportunities to experience this area as it was historically. The Sea Of Galilee and the region surrounding it is full of biblical history. For this reason, this area is a popular attraction for Christian and Jewish visitors from around the world.
More currently, in the early 1900′s this area was home to the Zionist movement. In 1917 this region came under attack as different countries attempted to take control. Palestine remained controlled by Britain and Syria was overtaken by France. In December of 1920, this lead to the Franco-Britain Boundary Agreement.
One of the most modern additions to this region includes the unveiling of the “Jesus Trail” in April of 2011. This trail runs through Galilee and is 40 miles in length. The trail ends in Capernaum, which is located on the shoreline of The Sea Of Galilee. The end of the trail is significant because this is the place where it is believed that much of Jesus’ ministry in this area took place. The “Jesus Trail” includes many walking and hiking paths, several bike paths, and some roadways. The purpose of this trail is to allow Christians easy access to the areas traveled by Jesus and His Disciples. These paths link many of the key areas spoken of in the Gospels together. Another awesome feature of this area is connection of The Sea Of Galilee with the Jordan River. Many thousands of Christians come to this sacred place annually to be Baptized in these waters.
As you can see, from the earliest of biblical times, to Jesus’ time of ministry, to modern times, this region remains a hub of religious, spiritual, historical, miraculous and modern events and life. If you are looking to truly capture a glimpse of a true time capsule and walk the very paths that Jesus walked, the regions surrounding and including The Sea Of Galilee will provide that for you. I enjoyed this Holy Land trip more than I have ever enjoyed any other trip. My favorite day was the Jericho and Dead Sea day. The sites were superb. Do you know that the Dead Sea is actually a lake? I never knew that until my tour. We watched the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen that day. The day in Bethlehem was so informative and touching, just beautiful. Then we had a good amount of time in Jerusalem. It actually felt like we might be walking in the steps of Jesus, with the narrated tour and all the wonderful history that surrounded us!
Thank you for sharing this information. I am working on getting a Holy Land tour scheduled for a Christian church group. This article really helped me decide which areas we wanted to be sure to add to our trip to Israel. We are very excited to take this trip. Seems there is tons to see and explore in Israel!
