Snow Skiing In Mount Hermon
- Cranes Flying Over Mount Hermon
- Old City Jerusalem
- Sea Of Galilee Shoreline
Snow has been falling in Mount Hermon and the surrounding region, on and off over the past week or so. Mount Hermon has opened the slopes with approximately 1 meter of snow on the lower slopes and over 1.5 meters on the upper slopes.
Implications On Northern Galilee and The Sea Of Galilee
The weather has turned cold and snowy in Golan Heights, with some blizzards reported. A rain and snow mix has been falling in and around Tzfat in northern Galilee. The change in weather has affected the entire region, with water levels rising over 10 cm in the Sea Of Galilee (Lake Kinneret). Even with the precipitation, Lake Kinneret is still over 40 cm low this season, thus the region is still considered to be in drought.
This winter in Israel has been a dry one and water restrictions have been placed to conserve fresh water. Thus, the precipitation is welcomed. The plants and wildlife in and around these regions are enjoying the extra moisture and change in weather.
Israel’s Precipitation Increases To Reduce Drought
Most of the country experienced three solid days of rain, from Friday through Sunday. This has helped most of the country come out of drought status, as most regions are at normal precipitation levels for this time of the season, as expected. However, the southern region has only received about 30 percent of the expected amount of precipitation for the season. Thus, this region is still in a drought.
Many regions are unseasonably cooler at this time. However, that is a nice change of pace for locals and tourists looking to get in some winter activities or looking to explore different areas of the country with cooler and more comfortable temperatures.
Winter Activities In And Around Northern Galilee
This is a wonderful time to explore all regions of Israel, as the cooler temperatures are conducive to outdoor exploration while remaining comfortable. Israel is fun to explore any time of the year. This winter is especially nice for hiking, walking and touring without having to worry about excessive heat and huge crowds.

I have been researching to schedule a trip to Israel for a church group. This was very helpful information. I think we may be scheduling our visit for early spring (probably April). We would like a trip that is a bit warmer, but not to hot!
