Herodion is a fortified mountain, built by King Herod, and named after him. Herodion Mountain is located on the border of the Judean desert, just a few miles east of Bethlehem. It is the second most famous man made fortress mountain, following Masada. It was used as a safety and security fortress for King Herod and his kingdom. Since it was built, it was also used zealots as a hiding place during the Bar Kochba revolt. Following that, the Byzantine monks used Herodion as a monastery.
